What is LukeFileWalker Antivirus? Is it Software?

I first heard of it while doing some research on keywords related to free antivirus software using Wordtracker. The phrase "free lukefilewalker antivirus" showed up and caught my attention. I started wondering if this was some new antivirus software being offered for free. I also wondered...If it is free, will it be any good at protecting computers from costly viruses, trojans, spyware and other security threats? Were virus definition updates going to be offered at no cost as well? If so, would they be available for download in a timely fashion? So many questions that need answering. My curiousity was piqued.

Luke Filewalker Virus Scanner Software?

I did a little more poking around and found that the phrase "luke filewaker" (with the space) was mentioned on more web sites than the single, solid string of characters "lukefilewalker". Indeed, this phrase too appeared to be related to other terms such as antivirus software and scanners and so on.

A did a little more digging and I think I found what this odd phrase is all about.

AntiVir by AVIRA

There is a security software company based in Germany called Avira. They produce line of antivirus software under the AntiVir brand name. As it turns out they do offer a free version (AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic) of their antivirus software for download as well as a few paid versions for other applications.

lukefilewalker...IS Free!

So, I did some surfing around on the Avira website and low and behold I found what this lukefilewalker thing is and how it relate to the whole free antivirus software world. The AVIRA antivirus software includes an "on demand scanner" that they call... You guessed it.... "Luke Filewalker".
